Musings of an Ist
On Living Alone

So the other day I was linked to this article about how people who are single generally have just as much support as married people, and actually over time tend to have more. Then, yesterday, I saw this segment where an author talks about research he’s done on the global trend of more and more people living alone, and how, in spite of his initial expectations, he seems to have found living alone has a lot of pluses.

I think a lot about whether or not I’m ever going to find someone, or if I even want to. I sort of fell into my last domestic situation, and I’m not opposed to doing that again, but going out and looking seems like a high-risk low-return endeavour to me. I am quite sure that the vast majority of the people now living alone are not being semi-forced into it by their sexual orientation like me, but reading and hearing this kind of stuff makes me hopeful anyway. If society is changing so that it’s socially acceptable to live alone and so that unmarried people have social opportunities and support networks, that’s a positive sign for me.

I’m hoping this is the start of a lot more conversation about this topic in the news and among people, because these voices are saying, “singledom is not a social problem.” And even though I know there will be backlash, hopefully the positives will drown out whatever “traditional family” advocate have to say.

Some perks of being single/living alone

- You can use Apocalyptica’s version of Hall of the Mountain King as your alarm in the morning and no one will accuse you of trying to give them heart attacks.

- Speaking of mornings. Upon waking up you don’t have to immediately start worrying that you may have drooled on your partner during the night.

- Let me tell you about all the good reasons to put on pants on a Sunday. Oh wait, there aren’t any, my bad.

- Woman laughing alone with computer. Enough said.

- Two! Four! Six! Eight! No one walks in on you when you masturbate!

- If you’re like me and your writing process involves walking around the house (occasionally pantless) for an hour mumbling to yourself before you actually sit down to write, you don’t have to worry about looking like an idiot, even though you sort of do. Nobody cares.

There’s some other mundane shit like having more money to spend and save, more time for yourself, but nothing compares to the joy of blasting symphonic metal at 6:30 AM.
